Our Diaconate
The Diaconate is a group of men and women appointed by the elders to serve those in our congregation who are in crisis or facing challenging circumstances.
Beliefs & Values
Our mission: Walking together to experience and share the love of Christ. As we live out this mission in North Hudson County, the following values and descriptions have priority in our church.
We are Christ-centered.
We believe that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ was the turning point in human history. At Redeemer, we cling to Christ because he brings us into fellowship with his loving Father. We rest in Christ because his achievements are the standard by which we are judged. We preach Christ because our lives only make sense with him at the center of it. Though the events of our world are meaningful, we do not believe them to be ultimate, so we hope in Jesus Christ our only Savior.
We are a family.
We are an authentic community of believers who love being together. We are a small enough church that you can have genuine relationships with everyone, and we value that. Most of the people at Redeemer have moved here from somewhere else, so we actively work to carve out life together. Urban life can be lonely, but we believe that God provides for his people with his people. We gather for worship, for food, for study, and for fun. Our aim is to provide a spiritual home for the people of North Hudson County.
We come from different neighborhoods.
Our church is still rebuilding (and reorienting) after the pandemic. For years we were focused almost exclusively on Hoboken. As we move forward, we have found a great need to minister to the communities of more than just Hoboken: like Jersey City Heights, Union City, Weehawken, West New York, and northward. As we expand our vision, we are learning how to share Christ with each of these unique communities and extend our footprint throughout.
We are Reformed.
Redeemer traces its spiritual heritage back to Switzerland and the Protestant Reformation. Our church is full of people from all sorts of church backgrounds, but our tradition is known for producing great theologians and a hopeful worldview. Being a Reformed church means that we believe in the goodness of God's creation, a powerful God who can do all things, and his love for us that is far deeper than we could possibly imagine.
We are Presbyterian.
We are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. That means we are affiliated with other like-minded churches in northern New Jersey and across the country. We also have a longstanding kinship with the Redeemer churches of New York City. We were planted by Redeemer NYC over twenty years ago and we maintain that connection with our ongoing participation in Redeemer's City to City NYC program.
Our church is here and sends everywhere.
The city is a transient place and we fully embrace that unique calling. We maintain the "family atmosphere" at Redeemer because people move to our church from all over the world. Some of these people are only at Redeemer for a few months, but we encourage them to make themselves at home. There is no double standard between those who are staying and those who are here for a short time. As work and life takes people elsewhere, they leave us having made a lasting impact in our church family. We also hope that they take a little slice of Jersey wherever they go. Please feel free to join us no matter how brief your stay. We are used to it. In fact, we cherish it.
